New York City can feel overwhelming when traveling with kids — there is so much to see, so many neighborhoods to explore, and endless food options. But with the right location and a good mix of sightseeing, kid-friendly activities, and downtime, NYC is an incredible family destination.
We spent 4 days / 3 nights in New York City with our family of four, and this itinerary gave us a great balance of iconic NYC experiences, delicious food, shopping, and plenty of breaks for little legs.
Where We Stayed: New York Marriott Marquis
For a family trip, we absolutely loved staying at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square.
The location was unbeatable. Being right in the middle of everything made it easy to walk to many attractions, grab food, and come back to the hotel when the kids needed a break. After long days exploring the city, having a convenient home base was a huge plus.
A few things we loved:
Easy access to subway stations
Walkable to Broadway theaters, Rockefeller Center, and Times Square
Plenty of restaurants nearby
Great option for families who want convenience over a quieter neighborhood
Day 1: Arrival + Central Park + Rockefeller Center
After flying into LaGuardia, we took a taxi straight to our hotel, dropped off our bags, and started exploring.
Central Park With Kids
Our first stop was Central Park, which was the perfect way to introduce the kids to NYC.
One of our favorite kid-friendly spots was letting them climb and play on the huge rocks throughout the park. It was such a simple activity but ended up being one of the highlights for them.
Central Park is a great reminder that NYC isn’t just skyscrapers — there are so many opportunities for kids to run, explore, and burn energy.
NYC Pizza Lunch
Of course, our first NYC meal had to be pizza! A classic New York slice was the perfect easy lunch after traveling.
Rockefeller Center + FAO Schwarz
After lunch, we explored Rockefeller Center and visited FAO Schwarz.
This was such a fun stop with kids — even as an adult, there is something nostalgic and magical about walking through this iconic toy store.
We grabbed an afternoon treat nearby at Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, which was the perfect pick-me-up.
Dinner at Chez Josephine
For dinner, we met friends at Chez Josephine, and it was such a quintessential NYC experience.
The prix-fixe menu of the day was delicious and a great value. The highlight was the live pianist and singer — it added such a special atmosphere and made dinner feel like part of the NYC experience rather than just a meal.
Day 2: NYC Shopping Day + Chinatown Food Tour
We started the morning slowly with breakfast at the hotel before heading out for our shopping day.
Breakfast at Liberty Bagels
Our first stop was Liberty Bagels for their famous rainbow bagel.
The kids loved the colorful bagel, but the real surprise was how good the cream cheese was! It was definitely worth the stop.
Tip: Most stores don’t open until around 10 AM, so plan your morning accordingly.
American Girl Store + LEGO Store
Next up was American Girl Place New York.
This was a nostalgic moment for me and such a fun memory because we purchased our daughter’s first American Girl doll.
After that, we visited the LEGO Store Rockefeller Center — another kid favorite.
We headed back to the hotel afterward to drop off our shopping bags and take a much-needed break.
Grand Central Terminal + Chinatown
Later, we walked to Grand Central Terminal to admire the architecture before taking the subway downtown to Chinatown.
Lunch at Peking Duck House
We had a late lunch around 3 PM, which ended up being perfect. The restaurant was quieter, and the food was delicious.
After lunch, we stopped at Chinatown Ice Cream Factory for dessert. They have really unique flavors and it was a fun experience for the kids.
On the way back to our hotel, we explored Times Square as the evening crowds started picking up.
The kids loved:
Disney Store Times Square
M&M's World New York
Seeing Times Square lit up at night is something every first-time NYC visitor should experience.
Day 3: Statue of Liberty + Ellis Island + Little Italy + Broadway
Statue of Liberty
We started the morning with the Statue of Liberty.
Our biggest recommendation: book pedestal tickets!
We found the pedestal area much less crowded and appreciated having extra space to walk around and explore. The bathrooms inside the pedestal were also a huge bonus when traveling with kids.
The audio guide included with the ticket was excellent, and they had a kid-friendly version that our son really enjoyed. It helped him stay engaged and learn about what we were seeing.
We were also impressed by how clean and spacious the Statue of Liberty grounds were.
Ellis Island
After the Statue of Liberty, we took the ferry to Ellis Island.
We wish we had planned more time here. Our kids were getting tired, so we only had a limited amount of time to explore, but it is definitely worth adding extra time.
There were also construction and enhancement projects happening during our visit, so there are exciting updates coming to the campus.
Little Italy Food Stops
After returning to Manhattan, we took the subway to Little Italy.
We grabbed lunch, snacks, and picked up desserts from Ferrara Bakery to enjoy back at the hotel later.
We spent the early evening resting — which is something we highly recommend when traveling with kids.
Broadway Show
That night we saw a Broadway show, and it was the perfect NYC ending to the day.
Day 4: Central Park Playground + Singing Diner
Before heading to the airport, we enjoyed one more NYC morning.
Central Park Playground
We took the subway back to Central Park and explored one of the playgrounds.
The kids loved having time to simply play after several busy sightseeing days.
Lunch at Ellen's Stardust Diner
For lunch, we went to Ellen’s Stardust Diner — famous for its singing waiters and waitresses.
And honestly? They really are excellent!
The performers were incredibly talented, and the kids loved the entertainment. It was such a fun family experience and a memorable way to end our trip.
Final Thoughts: Is NYC Worth Visiting With Kids?
Absolutely.
Our biggest tips for visiting NYC as a family:
Stay somewhere convenient (location matters!)
Plan fewer activities each day than you think you need
Build in hotel breaks
Use the subway — kids loved the adventure of it
Mix iconic attractions with kid-focused stops
Don’t underestimate the magic of simple NYC moments: pizza slices, playgrounds, lights in Times Square, and street performers
NYC is busy, but it is also incredibly memorable. With a little planning, it can be an amazing family trip that everyone enjoys.
